- Anaesthesia: the area is numbed with local anaesthetic.
- Recontouring: gum, and where required a small measured amount of bone, is reshaped so the gum heals at the intended level and stays there.
- Closure: the tissue is adapted and sutured where needed.
- Healing before restoration: the site matures for several weeks before the final crown or filling is made against a stable gum line.
Benefits and honest limitations
The decisive benefit: crown lengthening can turn an unrestorable tooth into a restorable one, letting you keep a natural tooth that would otherwise need extraction. Restorations finished on properly exposed margins also seal better and irritate the gum less.
Limitations to weigh: the treated tooth will look longer; post-operative sensitivity is common; removing support to expose tooth is a careful trade-off, which is why case selection matters; and the final restoration must wait for healing, adding weeks to the timeline. Results vary and are confirmed only after clinical assessment.
Recovery, aftercare and long-term value
Discomfort is usually mild and settles within days with prescribed medication. Eat on the other side initially, use the rinse provided, and avoid brushing the surgical site until advised. Sutures come out at about one to two weeks; the gum then remodels over the following weeks — a stage not to be rushed, because fitting the crown too early risks the margin shifting as tissue settles.
A crown finished on sound, cleanable tooth with healthy gum around it is far less prone to hidden decay at its margin — the same principle of correct depth relative to bone and gum that guides the clinic's implant work.
