- Charting: pocket depths are measured around every tooth, creating the baseline against which healing is judged.
- Anaesthesia: the area being treated is numbed, so cleaning inside the pockets is comfortable.
- Scaling: ultrasonic tips break up and flush away tartar above and below the gum line.
- Root planing: hand instruments smooth each root surface within the pockets.
- Sectional visits: the mouth is usually treated in halves or quadrants over two to four appointments.

Its limitations are real: it does not regrow lost bone or gum; very deep or awkwardly shaped pockets may not fully resolve and can require flap surgery; gums often shrink slightly as swelling resolves, which can expose more tooth and increase sensitivity for a while; and results depend heavily on daily plaque control, smoking and diabetes. Outcomes vary from patient to patient.
Recovery, aftercare and long-term protection
Expect numbness for a few hours after each visit, then mild soreness for a day or two and cold sensitivity that fades over days to weeks. Brush gently but thoroughly from the first evening, clean between teeth daily, use any prescribed rinse, avoid tobacco — which measurably impairs gum healing — and attend the re-evaluation visit, where success is actually confirmed.
